IKEA Stockholm Collection

Following my recent collaboration with IKEA (which I cannot thank you all enough for – the support and love I have received is just so overwhelming – nothing makes blogging better than when your readers are as pleased for you about a collaboration as you are for yourself, so thank you thank you thank you), I was lucky enough to be able to pick the brain of Viveca Olsson – Creative Leader at IKEA for the Stockholm Collection. So if you want to know a little more about the Stockholm collection then keep reading!

How long have you been Creative Leader at IKEA?

I have been working in our Range and Design department for 20 years as Range strategist. I work across many range projects for IKEA and am always “coordinating” across projects in our organisation. I have spent most of my time in the past four years mentoring and securing our new basic IKEA range. I have been the creative lead for STOCKHOLM since 2002 (4 collections since the start).

What was the concept behind the STOCKHOLM 2017 Collection and how has it evolved from the 2016 Collection?

We take extra care in designing the best quality in our range and to ensure that it is evolving as the way in which we live changes. STOCKHOLM always begins with the same concept, and then the different collection gets its visual refreshed update for the next stage. A new collection always feels new, relevant and fresh – it will also be a natural ‘next step’ in the range. Sustainability was hugely important for this collection – for example, we have worked directly with the suppliers in Indonesia for the rattan sourcing to ensure that we are creating exquisite designs whilst staying true to the IKEA sustainability values.

What’s your favourite piece from the STOCKHOLM 2017 Collection? Mine is without a doubt the Rattan Ash Cabinet!

Agree. The rattan products are all favourites, I think we all are longing for more tactile surfaces. I also love the sofa, it’s a 24/7 sofa — somewhere to socialize, relax, sleep, eat, work, do homework, play, listen to music, be together, and have a space of your own. It’s casual, convenient, comfortable, and beautiful, with many uses, and is made to fit any expression of style. I believe it will become the favourite piece in many homes.

There’s a clear dominance of blue coloured products in the collection – why is this?

All STOCKHOLM collections take inspirations from the nature. The colour this time are taking inspiration from one of my private photos from a winter night sky in south of Sweden. This collection has much more light wood in it, with rattan and ash replacing walnut. It also has a new colour scheme — a dark, Nordic blue that’s inspired by our water, which is always cold — even in the summer time. The fabrics and cushions in the collection are inspired by that shimmer you see in water that’s come from the cold sea, as well as a cold winter’s night sky, while the orange takes inspiration from a burning sunset.

Will we be seeing more from the STOCKHOLM Collection in 2018?

We hope to see another STOCKHOLM collection in the next few years – in the meantime the existing ranges will continue to be available for STOCKHOLM fans to enjoy, with the latest iteration available in the UK until April 2018.

A huge thanks to Viveca for sharing more about the collection. I really hope you have enjoyed this collaboration, I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed that I will get the chance to work with them again in the future!
