Under the Stairs Pantry Cupboard Reveal

Pink Under the Stairs Pantry Cupboard

It’s finally complete! Our little pantry reveal!

Previously an under the stairs cupboard in our kitchen which was essentially a dumping ground, I decided it was time to put this space to good use to actually maximise the storage space that we do have! Before we just chucked stuff in this cupboard and it was impossible to get anything from the back with it being so deep but with the slope you’d have to duck to get anything – not ideal, and as a result we just avoided going in there except to get the hoover from the front!

Putting shelves in was an obvious choice for a pantry, it’s a great way to display your food jars so that you can see everything at a glance, but I had to have a good think about what to do with the bottom half of the cupboard, we didn’t want to be having to reach right to the back whilst ducking down just to retrieve anything, a pantry needs to be practical! But at the same time I wanted to use the whole space – to the back of the cupboard. We talked about having horizontal drawers but I was concerned that the pure weight of all the food and jars inside the drawers (you have to keep in mind the depth of the cupboard) that it would be a lot of weight for the walls to hold and the back of the cupboard is just chipboard then onto the stairs so we couldn’t rely on its strength. I decided that pull out vertical drawers would be a much better solution – the weight is not reliant on the walls then! Matt also screwed some battens into the floor (DIY runners) to ensure the drawers stay in their own tracks going in and out. I’m not going to go into detail about how we (mostly Matt) actually built eveything, I did intend on but to be honest we had so many challenges with this space that we had to just make it up as we went along – there was a lot of trial and error! But, I believe that Matt is going to share a lot more of how he built the drawers and so on over on his instagram so if you’re interested in that, head over to his @onthegramhandyman Instagram.

It’s not the brightest cupboard so I decided white would be the best choice – I used some left over satin paint so that it’s practical and wipeable. On another practical note, Matt put a plug socket in just to the right on the inside of the door frame as we do intend of moving some of our smaller kitchen appliances in here since we just don’t have room/want them out on display on the kitchen worktops all the time – like our blender etc. Of course I had to add brass detailing – as always! I’m absolutely delighted with the Semi Circular Drawer Knobs we used from Dowsing &  Reynolds. The perfect touch! The rattan we fitted ourselves too – I’ll be sharing the how to on this when we reveal our next DIY very shortly – it’s an IKEA hack! Coming soon so stay tuned for that… but in the mean time, we bought the rattan from here. The pink door is painted using left over paint that I’ve used for all the bathroom doors – I get so many questions on this pink shade but unfrotunately it was a custom colour that I had mixed at Valspar in B&Q to match my favourite pink plant pot! Sorry! Everything else should be linked below but let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

P.S. It seems the most popular item in this whole makeover is the food storage jars – if you want 15% OFF THE GOLD HARDWARE STORAGE JARS them just follow my link here.
