Mantanani – a remote island with palm trees, several amazing snorkelling spots and the bluest, warmest water I have ever visited. We spent a couple of days at Mari Mari Backpackers Lodge on Mantanani Island – also known as Mermaid Island, in a Sulap hut and it was the best part of our holiday. It’s about an hours drive from Kota Kinabalu airport and then roughly 40 minutes on a boat to get to Mantanani, and despite the expensive, long haul flights to get to Borneo (Malaysia), the cost of living there is a lot less than here in the UK which means food and even excursions aren’t going to cost you an arm and a leg!
The island’s beaches are sadly littered in places but I read that most of the islands this side of Borneo are, the beach in front of Mari Mari Backpackers Lodge is cleaned up every day though so you won’t notice it unless you take a long sweaty walk around the island like we did. If you venture a little further you’ll come across cats, goats and cows – yes cows on the beach which belong to the locals.
Anyway, I’m not going to rabbit on – but I couldn’t help but share these photos of this beautiful island! Let me know if you’re thinking of visiting this part of the world… until then I will be wallowing in self pity over my holiday blues!
